Discovered by - Alex Fredrick Cronstedt
Discovered where - Sweden
Discovered when - 1751, about 250 years ago
Discovered name - Nickel came from two German words, Nickel means 'Old Nick' a name for the devil, and from Niccolite (kupfernickel) another German word which means 'Old Nick's Copper'
Nickel was discovered by Alex Fredrick Cronstedt in another mineral, niccolite. Alex extracted a white metal from niccolite expecting to extract copper. The white mineral that he extracted, he called nickel, after the mineral that it was extracted from. He extrated a white metal that he called nickel.
Health and Environmental Effects
Nickel is found in the crusts and inside the earths layer, but can be released into the earths atmosphere through power plants and trash incinerators. Once in the air it may fall back down to the earth through reactions with raindrops. Though once it is in the air, it may take a while before it comes back down again. Once down again it will be absorbed to sediment or soil particles and from there becomes immobile as a result.
Nickel is an essential foodstuff in small amounts toward animals, though it is not only favored as an essential element, it can become dangerous in large quantities. Nickel can cause cancer on different parts of the animals bodies but mostly to ones that live close to refineries.
The foods we eat naturally contain small amounts of nickel inside of them. Though foods with high quantities are chocolate and fats. We don't need to be exposed to nickel through food products, but also through air. Humans can breathe it through cigarettes smoke, power plants, and factories.
